What is an index fund?

La versione italiana di questa pagina è in preparazione. Fino ad allora il testo è mostrato in inglese.

An index fund builds its portfolio to track the movement of a stock index and aims for the market's average return.

Compared with ordinary funds, it tends to have lower turnover and transaction costs, and return differences between index funds are small. It resembles an ETF in that it tracks an index, but differs in that index funds are usually not listed on an exchange.
