What does ex-dividend mean?

Ex-dividend means that buying the shares no longer comes with the right to receive the most recently declared dividend.
On the ex-dividend date, it is relatively common for the share price to fall by roughly the amount of the dividend, reflecting the reduction in the company's assets from paying it out. Therefore, receiving a dividend does not simply add that amount to your profit.
