What does a bond's credit rating mean?

A credit rating is a letter grade expressing a credit rating agency's assessment of a bond issuer's ability to repay principal and interest.
A lower rating reflects the agency's opinion that the likelihood of default is relatively high. Because credit ratings are opinions reflecting the agency's judgment and experience, it is best not to treat them as an absolute guarantee of safety.
