What is a stock?

A share of stock is a unit that makes up the capital of a stock company, and it also means the equity interest (status as a shareholder) that a shareholder obtains by contributing capital to the company.
Shareholders have rights in proportion to their stake, such as voting, receiving dividends and receiving distributions of residual assets. When shares are transferred, this shareholder status passes along with them.
