What sanctions apply to illegal short selling?

Illegal short selling is subject to criminal penalties such as fines and to administrative penalty surcharges.

From April 23, 2025, new measures were introduced: orders restricting violators from trading financial investment products for up to 5 years or from being appointed as officers of listed companies and the like, and a system for suspending payments from accounts suspected of being used for illegal short selling. These also apply to those who commit the three major types of unfair trading.
